Empress Ki with Ha Ji won, Ji Chang Wook and Joo Jin Mo. Isn't that enough to have you start watching the 51 episode long drama??? Plus all of them in some super elaborate historic clothing. I was so watching it. It was one of the longest drama I watched on a weekly basis, so I had to wait for 2 episodes per week for 20 weeks (or so).
Brief overview of the drama: The story revolves around Sungnyang, (a Goryeo woman) who ascends to becomes the empress of the Yuan dynasty. And the series depicts her love for Wang Yu (the king of Goryeo) and Ta Hwan (Emperor).

What so awesome about it: The acting from all the actors were pretty solid. LOVE LOVE LOVE Ha Ji Won's acting in almost anything, started watching her from secret garden, (which i adored) and kings 2 heart, and this is my 3rd drama with her acting as the female lead (i watched the time we were in love after that) and she is Solid, she can make you believe in all her romance. She can be cute and adorable, and fight and be firm. I dunno how she do all of that, but she is good and I will continue to be her fan. I am slightly biased, but her acting is really good.
With regards to saeguk drama, I am always concerned about the skinship, because in an era where showing skin is considered flirting, Skinship means SO MUCH MORE. In scenes where Seung nyang finally accepted Ta Hwan and decided to give herself to him, the way she dress is so much more grand and provocative, yet without showing skin and being cheap. I love love love their choice of clothing.
This is probably one of the few shows that I watched through all the political fights, (since i watched it with my mum, and i can't fast forward the show) I actually enjoyed most of the fights. As it really shows the ugly side of people, when the Empress Dowager (acted by Kim Seo hyung, who doesn't age) wanted to protect Ta Hwan and Seung nyang to finally betray the Emperor for power. It shows the ugly side of power in a believable way, as she counts her aliases and enemies. I also enjoyed when Wang Yu secretly helps Sungnyang (and vice versa), I have one of the worst second lead syndrome in kdrama. Their love is so potent and strong and I love those parts when she had to cross dress and everyone fell in love with her thinking that they were gay,
TALTAL, he is so cute right!!! credits to pinterest (the one that pinned it) |
One of the shout outs to Taltal (acted by Jin Yi han) who has the best mane award for the show, and pulling off the fringe the best. He looks so awesome and he is so righteous, and smart and if Ji Chang Wook wasn't the king ( Ji chang wook is so handsome!!!), I would be so made that taltal's role is kinda minor.
Recommends: YESYESYES, IF you are a fan of Ha Ji Won, You should definitely watch this drama. This drama possibly showed the best of her acting skills, in all ways. She can be cute and demanding, fierce and ladylike. She fought in wars and wore the prettiest clothes around. Would I recomend this for the other actors.... not as much, since Tahwan and Wang Yu didn't really have a happy ending. (If you like Ji Chang wook watch Healer!!! His character is the total opposite in that show, he is so smart and adorable. In this show, while its shows him growing to be more mature to be king-like, he never really outshine Ha Ji Won.) so yup that's it for this week.
I am going to take a break for these 2 weeks since exams are coming and I don't have time to watch dramas. Please leave some comments to what dramas would you like me to do a ranting on.
I wanted to watch this drama because it had such good ratings but then...... 51 episodes!!! Please review 步步惊心 thanks.
ReplyDeleteFast track to 2019.. 51 hours of your lifetime is well worth of investment... all the actors are great and so committed to their role. I lose sleep just to binge watch this as the show is so addictive..
ReplyDeleteAll the roles were filled by actors appropriately.
Highly recommended although this is a pretty ‘OLD’ series.
